3 Ways to Wear The Puffer Coat

3 Ways to Wear It: The Puffer Coat

THIS SEASONAL STAPLE IS MORE VERSATILE THAN YOU MIGHT THINK

Puffer coats: They’re so ubiquitous they might seem like the lowest common denominator of winter outerwear. They’re the sort of thing you wear to Target at 2 a.m. on Black Friday because your little brother absolutely insists on heading out into the shopping night.
Choose well, though, and you can find puffers that are both stylish and warm—and won’t give off even a whiff of Marshmallow Man vibe. Can we really ask more of a coat? In the winter, maybe not.
Below, three options that tweak the standard puffer just enough to breathe new life into an old (old) favorite.

OPTION 1: DOWNTOWN COOL

Coat: Scottevest, $190 | Shirt: River Island, $61 | Jeans: Nudie, $209
Shoes: Fred Perry, $105 | Watch: Swatch, $150 | Wallet: Alexander Wang, $225
Wear it well: Puffers don’t have to actually be puffy.
This one, from Scottevest, cuts a slim figure, without losing the warmth or the quilting.

OPTION 2: SLEEK ‘N’ CHIC

Coat: Mackage, $950 | Sweater: Acne Studios, $300 | Shirt: Gap, $50
Watch: Kimono, $100 | Shoes: ASOS, $85 | Pants: PS by Paul Smith, $262
Wear it well: This amazing Mackage coat is officially a puffer, thanks to that quilting, albeit one with a serious upgrade courtesy of the leather sleeves and the (removable) fur hood. (I know, I know—it’s a fortune. But you’ll have it forever, and if you’re going to splurge on anything, outerwear is it.) Maintain the dressed-up vibe with a monochromatic look in black, white, and gray.

OPTION 3: OUTDOOR WEEKEND

Jacket: Penfield, $250 | Shirt: Bridge and Burn, $59 | Watch: ASOS, $15
Pants: Topman, $50 | Wallet: Souled Out, $42 | Shoes: Converse by John Varvatos, $100
Wear it well: Puffers want to be outside—especially in an outside-the-box color like this cherry red
