Ways To Wear Black : Spring/Summer 2015

Ways To Wear Black: Spring/Summer 2015

Timeless And Classic
Although we’re very much aware that technicolour and pastels are set to be huge trends come summer, that doesn’t mean we all want to step out in dusty pink or sunshine yellow.
Some of us like to keep things timeless and simple, sticking to the darker end of the colour spectrum. And if the French have taught us anything about style over the years, it’s that black clothes look effortlessly cool and sophisticated, no matter whether you’re dressing up or down.
The only problem is, heading out to dinner on a warm summer’s day in a black suit isn’t the most practical choice (and sweat patches aren’t too attractive either). Nor is pulling on a pair of black skinnies for an outdoor music festival in May.
With this in mind, we’re set to showcase five black pieces that will seamlessly transition into spring, while offering advice on how to style each in a modern way.
The Biker Jacket
Nothing says ‘I’m cool’ better than a classic black leather biker jacket. It’s an iconic piece that all men can pull off, and it brings an edge to your personal style that may otherwise be lacking.
While we have seen menswear’s tastemakers teaming their leathers with suiting separates this season, we believe a biker jacket looks best dressed-down.
To do this, team it with a fresh white T-shirt, dark tapered jeans and your favourite smart trainers. James Dean might be turning in his grave at the thought of a biker being worn with sneakers, but that’s how it’s done these days.

The Tailored Trouser
The tailored trouser is appearing in a variety of new forms this season, with two key trends being pleats and cropped cuts.
The Zara trousers below incorporate both, making them ideal for SS15. The key to pulling them off is keeping your styling simple – these trousers boast fantastic detailing, and you should let that do the talking.
If you’re trim enough, tuck a neutral T-shirt into them for a retro, Justin O’Shea-inspiredtake on a go-to high-low combination. Alternatively, if you want to go down a more conventional route, combine with a crisp white granddad shirt and grey blazer for a spring wedding or evening out.

The Retro Shades
Hello 1955. A pair of classic all-black Clubmaster-style sunglasses will bring a vintage, Riviera touch to any of your outfits this spring.
Don’t get too stuck in the past though – these should be combined with more contemporary pieces for a considered juxtaposition of old and new.
A super-slim-fit suit would work well, or try them with a white tee and MA-1 flight jacket to bring a retro appeal to your of the moment sports luxe attire.
If you’re going on holiday in the next couple of months, these should be the first thing you pack in your suitcase.

The Sportswear Shorts
Yes, sports-inspired pieces are still everywhere, but that’s OK.
If you’re looking to jump on the trend, a pair of relaxed black jersey or nylon shorts are comfortable and versatile for off-duty days. If you play basketball, great, wear them to do that in, but even if you don’t, keep things court side-friendly with a pair of minimal trainers and a bomber jacket on top. Five-panel hat optional.

The Classic Tee
A black T-shirt is one of the most flattering and versatile items a man can own. Not only do they offer a natural slimming effect, they can also be combined with nearly every other piece in your wardrobe, setting the foundation for a variety of looks.
As with any staple, when you find a brand that you like, buy in bulk. Multipacks will save you money and ensure your basics last longer by offering good rotation.
There’s almost nothing a black tee doesn’t look great with, so let your own personal style and taste dictate how and when you wear them. Try one layered under a pale grey suit for a sophisticated contrast, or throw one on with a pair of slim white trousers for a spring-appropriate monochrome look.
